New Era College Sponsors and Participates in the First All-Africa STEM Awareness Conference in Lusaka, Zambia
26 October, 2021
New Era College of Arts, Science and Technology recently came on as a platinum sponsor and
participated in the First All-Africa STEM Awareness Conference which was held in Lusaka, Zambia on the
23rd to the 24th of September.
The aim of the Conference was to raise awareness on STEM education and discuss possible STEM based
solutions to address some of the most pressing challenges facing Africa today. New Era College sent
along its team of STEM engineers who were led by Senior Lecturer for Electrical and Electronics Mr. Fred
Musunga.
The College made a presentation on the use of STEM in Agriculture and showcased some of the
innovative solutions the team has come up with for farmers. One such solution is an automated water
management system that uses GSM to communicate remotely with the farmer thus reducing his
constant need to be on site. Speaking during the presentation Mr. Musunga mentioned that “the system
is useful for both commercial and non-commercial farmers. STEM solutions in Agriculture would
increase food yield and cement food security in African countries, taking in consideration that Africa has
a plethora of raw materials.”
Skills in programming, robotics and electronics will be vital for the success of every young learner who
wishes to have a thriving career in the future job market. New Era College prides itself on producing job
ready graduates who receive adequate industry training during the course of their studies through their
industrial attachment program.
New Era College and the Zambia STEM Foundation engaged in a Memorandum of Agreement in 2020,
with the goal to expand, exchange and foster knowledge and insight in STEM education between
regions. Following the conference, the College STEM Engineers conducted a special training for the
Zambia STEM Foundation and University of Zambia Engineering students, on the use of the College’s
STEM kits and technology. These innovation kits encourage learners to innovate on their own and create
their own unique solutions. Through extending these skills to the Zambian STEM foundation, The College
aims to promote STEM education in marginalized student groups to improve livelihoods in African.
